Mom doesnât say anything back to me as I finish my story of spending the night at Stevenâs and whyâleaving out entirely the make out session. She dries off dishes that sheâs just washed with a blue hand towel and sheâd nod whenever I would say something that might be important to the conversation.
âSo, long story short, sorry I didnât tell you where I was last night.â I lean forward, my arms pressed into the counter as I watch her.
âForgiven.â She smiles at me, but now I can tell that sheâs really waiting for me to finish talking so she can start a different subject.
I roll my eyes when sheâs not looking. âSpit it out. Whatâs on your mind, Mom?â
âYour dad and I were talking last night and were wondering if youâre considering getting a job or going to college. Or both.â She finishes drying a large glass baking pan and sets it on the stove, turning to look at me. âYouâve been out of school for a month now. Are there collegeâs youâve been looking into? I know the grocery store down the street is hiring for a night shift in their bakery. Your dadâs office might be looking for a part time receptionist as well.â
My stomach starts twisting into nervous knots. When did this adult thing suddenly become important? I hadnât given much thought to either college or workâespecially not jobs like a receptionist or bakery girl. I donât want to think about it very much either. I feel like everything thatâs happened this summer with Kenyon and now Steven is overwhelming enough without all the added adult responsibilities that I should be taking on.
âIâll think about it. College isnât a bad idea.â
âCollege would definitely help you get a job and perfect your graphic design skills.â She stacks some plates and starts putting them away. âYou could rock anything you went to school for. You know your dad and I will help you out with anything. College applications, resumes, anything. Donât forget that.â
She smiles at me as I stand up to go find Colleen to play catch with. âOkay, thanks.â
